The American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83 with registration N984TW was formerly operated by Trans World Airlines (TWA) and named "Spirit of Long Beach," a tribute to the Boeing manufacturing plant location in Long Beach, California where the MD-80 series was produced. This particular aircraft holds the distinction of being the last MD-80 series aircraft ever built, with its final delivery in December 1999.

N984TW is notable for marking the end of MD-80 production and has a storied operational history including service with TWA before becoming part of American Airlines' fleet after the merger. The aircraft was ceremoniously retired by American Airlines in 2019, closing the chapter on decades of MD-80 operations that were significant for both airlines.
